The aircraft had departed on Friday night on its return trip to Honolulu but was forced to return after one and a half hours in the air after a problem was detected with the plane's tail.

Another plane was to bring spare parts to fix the problem but was delayed following difficulties finding a crew.

Among the stranded passengers were students of Kapolei High School and a US Marine Corps Band from Hawai'i, who entertained in the 115th anniversary of the raising of the US flag in American Samoa.

They are now scheduled to depart Pago Pago this afternoon.
