Sport: Team Wellington in box seat for O-League semis

2:17 pm on 16 April 2015

Team Wellington continued their perfect start to life in the Oceania Champions League, scoring twice in the first half to overcome former champions Hekari United 2-0.

In another wet evening in Suva, tournament newcomers Wellington went in front through an own goal, when a cross from Luis Corrales was deflected off a defender and past goalkeeper Beniainio Mateinaqara.

Hekari continued to dominate possession, ending the match with 60 percent of the ball, but it was their opponents who found the scoresheet again with former All Whites striker Jarrod Smith finishing from close range in first half stoppage time.

In the second half, Team Wellington sat back and protected their lead, holding on for a win that puts them three points clear at the top of Group C, and all but guaranteed a spot in the semi finals.

In the later match Angelo Tchen converted an 85th minute penalty to salvage a 1-1 draw for Tahiti's AS Tefana against Vanuatu's Tafea, a result that eliminated both teams from playoff contention.

The final group placings will be decided tomorrow when Wellington meet Tafea and Hekari clash with Tefana.
