Fiji's fisheries minister has launched a taskforce to develop seaweed farming, saying Fiji is blessed with seaweed resources.
The taskforce, to headed by the fisheries minister Osea Naiqamu, says the government needs to ensure that seaweed farming becomes a major industry in the next few years.
He says the turnover from seaweed is very fast compared to other crops such as sugarcane and pine, with minimal start-up costs.
Mr Naiqamu says the country is blessed with seaweed resources, but they need to find a way to sustain the industry and ensure consistency in supply.
