Assistance from the International Red Cross is being sent to Tuvalu today to help the recovery from the storm surge caused by Cyclone Pam.

Nearly half of the the country's population of approximately nine and a half thousand has been displaced by the flooding which washed away houses and crops.

The regional head for the International Red Cross Aurelia Balpe says a delegate from the Cook Islands will also arrive in Tuvalu on Thursday to help co-ordinate relief.

Aurelia Balpe says boats have been sent out to assess the damage in the outer islands.

We released some emergency funds so those boats could get out and that the Red Cross could get on them and release some early distribution.

Aurelia Balpe says the government and aid organisations are waiting for the assessment results before they can determine how much more assistance will be needed.
