Akilisi Pohiva says Tongans have been depending on remittances from overseas for so long that they have lost the sense of self reliance.

He also says the country has been asking donors to support its budget, which is not good.

But Mr Pohiva says Tonga has reasonable resources and it can live within the boundaries of its financial capacity.

He says he wants to see Tonga satisfied with what it has in order to be self-sufficient.

The American magazine had journalists in the country for a week collating material for a feature on Tonga.
