Micah extends PNG Power state of emergency

3:52 pm on 6 February 2015

Papua New Guinea's minister for public enterprise and state investment has extended a state of emergency declared to help collect money owed to the country's electricity provider.

The state of emergency was declared at the start of the year when the National Executive Council decided to take the action to recoup 77 million US dollars owed to PNG Power by public and private sectors, as well as individuals.

The minister Ben Micah recently said the state of emergency had enabled PNG Power to turn around the situation, with many people now starting to pay their bills.

But EMTV reports Mr Micah saying the state of emergency is far from reaching its ultimate goal.

He says the state of emergency will be extended to the 22nd of February, with the possibility of another month's extension.
