Fiji's Ministry of Health says the number of laboratory confirmed cases of dengue fever this month has risen to 48 in the Northern Division up from 17 at the start of the week.

The Ministry says hospitals in the area are preparing response plans for funding to combat the outbreak.

The Fiji Times reports Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is interested in supporting Fiji to control the mosquito-borne illness.

The Ministry says it is sending blood samples to reference laboratories to confirm the type of dengue involved and the government's response to the outbreak will be intense irrespective of the strain
