UN grant to help Tonga Crisis Centre promote services

7:37 am on 5 January 2015

The UN Women project has awarded over 300-thousand US dollars worth of grants to four organisations in Tonga to help them end violence against women.

The Women and Children's Crisis Centre will use 100,000 dollars to publicise the services they offer.

The centre houses violence victims, provides legal advice and runs educational programmes.

Director Ofa Guttenbeil-Likiliki says the funding will spread their messages for the next couple of years.

"A woman who is located as far out as Niuatoputapu, hearing this on radio can call us and get counselling on the phone and if she is in total dire straits we can actually facilitate bringing her over to the main island and putting her up in the safe house if that's her decision."

The Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Centre for Women and Children and the Ma'a Fafine mo e Famili project were also granted funds from the UN.
