To ease overcrowding at Tafa'igata Prison, Samoa's Chief Justice has granted bail to a number of defendants awaiting the hearing of charges against them.

The Chief Justice, Patu Tiava'asu'e Falefatu Sapolu, said in court that Tafa'igata Prison was overcrowded, and this was putting a strain on food supply.

As a result of his decision, many defendants were able to spend Christmas with their families.
