Names submitted to form New Caledonian govt

5:28 pm on 26 December 2014

Five lists of candidates to form a new New Caledonian government have been submitted just before the deadline's expiry on Christmas Day.

They are the same as in June when the government was formed that collapsed this month amid disagreements over fiscal policy.

The Congress is due to meet on Thursday to elect the new 11-member government, which is to reflect the parties' relative strength in the Congress.

The anti-independence Caledonia Together party says it now wants the presidency.

Under the deal which collapsed the presidency was given to Cynthia Ligeard of the Front for Unity.

The Caledonia Together leader Philippe Gomes has warned that an impasse could trigger fresh general elections - less than a year after the last ones.
