The finance and police ministries have been the subject of intense negotiations within government ranks, with finance in particular being sought by former prime minister, Snyder Rini, and Mathew Wale.

The Solomon Star newspaper says the prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, has dismissed reports that cabinet would decide who got the roles.

He told the paper the decision is his but he has consulted all the members of cabinet so he could make an informed decision.
