The Human Rights League in New Caledonia says the health of 450 prison inmates in the territory is in an alarming state.
It says access to care for prisoners at Camp Est jail in Noumea has been compromised as the number of inmates has grown but the level of care has not been matched.
The Human Rights League regrets that unlike in France, prisoners in New Caledonia lose their medical cover.
The prison management says the French state takes charge of the medical care, saying its allocation for it has been growing.
The Camp Est has been widely condemned as one of the worst jails run by France.
