Papua New Guinea Police say the work of a joint taskforce with the Defence Force should ensure that another violent conflict between the forces is avoided.
Over the weekend, four soldiers were injured in an armed stoush with police.
The dispute began after two PNGDF personnel were told by police to stop drinking outside a Port Moresby nightclub.
Police spokesperson Inspector David Terry says there have been issues between the two forces in the past, but it is hoped a new taskforce will bring about a peaceful conslusion.
"Business has resumed as normal but it is tense I can say. I'm hopeful we will soon find an amicale solution. We will sort this issue out the Melanesian way. Because of the issues in the media there is a lot of anxiety and fear. We've had these incidences in the past where soldiers have had problems with the police."
Inspector David Terry says an investigation into the incident should be complete within two weeks.
