Fiji have retained their position at the top of the World Sevens Series despite coming up short in the defence of their Dubai title.

Ben Ryan's side beat New Zealand in the third place playoff after being upset by Australia in the semi finals.

Fiji have 39 points after two rounds, two ahead of Dubai champions South Africa, with Australia and New Zealand rounding out the top four Olympic qualification spots.

Samoa slipped to fifth overall after missing out on the Cup quarter finals.

Fuimaoni Titimaea Tafua's side did manage a consolation by winning the Bowl final in Dubai.

Meanwhile the draw for this weekend's South Africa Sevens in Port Elizabeth have been made with Fiji drawn in Pool C alongside Scotland, France and Canada, with Samoa, New Zealand, England and Japan in a blockbuster Pool D.
