Sport: Tongan coach hails Jake White influence

10:48 am on 22 November 2014

'Ikale Tahi coach Mana Otai has praised the influence of Rugby World Cup winning mentor Jake White on the Tongan team during their European tour.

The former Sprinboks coach was appointed last month to serve as technical advisor for the November tests against Georgia, the United States and Scotland.

The 'Ikale Tahi are unbeaten on tour going into their final match against the Scots in Kilmarnock tomorrow morning and Otai says White has been instrumental in the way the team is playing.

"Jake is a godsend for us. Not only he brings that experience, that knowledge and the way he delivers things but also he's a good fit for us. It's one thing to come with all the know-how and the experience but in the Pacific Islands there is a different way we do things, however Jake has a way of getting messages through to players. We would like to take all the credit for the results that we are currently having at the moment but I think a lot of it has to with Mr White and the help that he has given us."

Mana Otai says he's hopeful White will be able to continue helping the team next year in the lead-up to the 2015 World Cup.

Meanwhile Samoa and Fiji also complete their Northern tours tomorrow morning against England at Twickenham and the United States in Vannes, France.
