Fiji's DPP still considering assault cases

Fiji's Director of Public Prosecutions Office says it is still considering two cases of alleged brutality by security personnel.

The first case involves 30-year old Vilikesa Soko who died at Lautoka Hospital in August after allegedly being beaten while in police custody.

The other is of retired teacher Joseva Bilitaki who says he was assaulted in September by military personnel after sending angry texts to the FijiFirst leader and Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama.

The police have sent files to the Public Prosecutions Office following their investigations but a spokesperson says no decision on whether to lay charges has been made.

Police are still investigating a video that was released online about 18 months ago, showing the severe beating of two recaptured prisoners.
