Solomons election observers deployed

9:24 am on 17 November 2014

Commonwealth observers move into position today in seven of Solomon Islands nine provinces in preparation for Wednesday's elections.

The Chairperson of the Commonwealth Observer Group, Sir Mekere Morauta, has commended efforts made by Solomon Islands to address recommendations made by observers in 2010.

The recommendations include more participation by women candidates and the revision of the voter registration list.

Sir Mekere, who is a former Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, says the observer group is there to see if Solomon Islanders are able to vote without hindrance and that the election process adheres to the country's laws.

"Here is the time that you exercise that constitutional right of yours to elect leaders, because it is their policies that influence the country and its future in which you live and your children live. So the central message is exercise your right to vote."
