Swains Islanders re-elect American Samoa delegate

12:21 pm on 3 November 2014

Swains Islanders have selected Su'a Alex Jennings as their delegate to the House of Representatives, beating his uncle who also made a bid for the seat.

Su'a has been the Swains delegate since 2005, but unlike previous years, where he was nominated by consensus, a vote was held.

Su'a's Uncle, William Pedro, said he wanted to be the Swains representative because after years with Su'a as the delegate, there had been no improvements on Swains.

In a show of hands, 35 voted for Su'a and 15 voted for Pedro.

Su'a says he's honoured to once again be nominated, and there are no hard feelings towards his uncle.

"I've known him forever, and I have a lot of respect for him, and I totally agree with some of his concerns. And I look forward to working with him in the next couple of years, but I just hope that we can continue to stay together because we are taking some very sensitive issues that requires a unified Tokelau community."
