Case against Kiribati president in court

12:21 pm on 3 November 2014

The Kiribati High Court is today due to hear a case brought by an opposition MP Tebuai Uaai against the President Anote Tong for making false claims in a ministerial payment dispute.

The MP has taken issue with a statement by the President in parliament.

The MP and his colleague had demanded that the health minister pay back to the government the cost of an airfare for his spouse for an overseas trip a few years ago.

Defending his minister, President Tong told parliament at that time that the money had already been returned.

However, the MP and his opposition colleagues say they later learned that the money was only reimbursed following the meeting.

The case was adjourned last Wednesday because the MP's lawyer was unwell.
