1:48 pm on 28 October 2014

The commander of the French Armed Forces in New Caledonia, Brigadier-General Luc de Revel, has met his Fiji counterpart Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga in Suva with a view to rekindle ties.

Brig-Gen De Revel says the meeting is to develop and deepen military relations and co-operation between the two countries

He says the first visit was to initiate talks and set the platform for further discussions.

The outgoing French ambassador Gilles Montagnier says they also wanted to be the first country to officially restart military relations with Fiji after the conclusion of last month's election.

The last time Fiji had French military personnel over for training was in 2006
