9:55 pm on 14 October 2014

Papua New Guinea's Foreign Minister says he's had a useful briefing on the incoming Indonesian government of President Joko Widodo at the Bali Democracy Forum.

Having just returned from Bali, Rimbink Pato says Indonesia's Foreign Minister, Marty Natelagawa, facilitated a briefing for him with senior Indonesian officials to discuss the incoming administration.

Mr Pato says he was very impressed with the briefing on what PNG could expect from the new government of its neighbour.

He says he expects PNG's O'Neill/Dion Government can continue to build on the warm relations it forged with Indonesia during the term of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono

Indonesia has offered to provide assistance to PNG in preparing to host APEC in 2018.

Meanwhile, Mr Pato says one of the panels he was on at the Forum enabled him to share PNG's perspective on transparency and accountability in the government decision making processes and citizen involvement.

He says he shared PNG's experience in providing mediation between business and landowners to ensure broad stakeholder participation in resource developments.
