3:13 pm on 13 October 2014

The outgoing MP for Central Guadalcanal in Solomon Islands, Peter Shanel Agovaka, has been arrested on an assault charge.

The Solomon Star newspaper reports the victim was seeking financial assistance from Mr Agovaka when the alleged attack occurred.

In 2008, Mr Agovaka lost his seat after being jailed for nine months on an assault conviction and for the illegal possession of a weapon.

He was re-elected as the MP for Central Guadalcanal in 2010.

The paper reports the MP is now on bail and will appear in court on November the 10th - nine days before the general elections.

It is not yet known if he intends to stand - nominations close on October the 22nd.
