The Solomon Islands police are to be out in force during the upcoming elections to ensure voters can participate without fear of intimidation.

The commissioner of police, Frank Prendergast, made the assurance in Honiara following the opening of nominations for candidates to contest seats in the 50-seat National Parliament.

He says police will be deployed to all polling stations being established in the 50 constituencies.

Mr Prendergast says the national elections are important to Solomon Islands and the police will make sure voters cast their ballots without harassment.

Mr Prendergast says the police will provide security prior to and after the national elections.
