Temotu tsunami victims yet to recover

9:11 pm on 24 September 2014

A victim from a tsunami in Solomon Islands' Temotu Province says they have not recovered from the disaster despite what other people may believe.

The disaster claimed at least 10 lives and displaced thousands in February 2013.

Almost a thousand are still living in temporary shelters with no money to rebuild.

Joycelyn Yanoi from Nela village in Lata says she thinks each family would need about 4000 US dollars to rebuild their homes.

Her words are translated.

This time (Right now) people think that we have recovered from the Tsunami but we haven't recovered yet. We all, everyone, are still living in tents. The problem is we don't have enough money to afford materials, especially building materials.

A proposal for funding towards the rebuild has been approved by Government but Cabinet is still to allocate the funding.

That decision has now been delayed further by the pending election.
