Registrations up by 8,000 for Tonga poll

Tonga's Supervisor of Elections says nearly 50,000 people have registered to vote in November's election.

Pita Vuki says that's around 8,000 more people than the last elections four years ago.

The deadline for voter registrations was Tuesday.

Mr Vuki says a lot of first time voters registered leading to the increase but hard work by the commission also deserves credit.

"We had to go around the villages and communities to do voter registration there. At the same time we did some promotional works through text messages and TV and radio programmes urging people to come and register for this year's elections and that programme completed around March and April."

The nomination of candidates will be held on October 23 and 24. The election will be held on November 27.
