Tahitian surfer Michel Bourez has won his opening heat at the Hurley Pro event in San Clemente, California.
The 28 year old recorded a best wave of 7.60 in his total of 14.20, to finish ahead of Brazil's Filipe Toledo and Frenchman Jeremy Flores.
He advances directly to the third round along with third ranked Joel Parkinson, while World Championship Tour leader Gabriel Medina and second placed Kelly Slater both finished second in their heat and will contest the second round.
