Absentee voting begins in American Samoa

10:01 am on 10 September 2014

Local absentee voting begins in American Samoa on Wednesday, for eligible voters who will be off island on November 4th.

Those who qualify to vote absentee are those traveling for medical treatments; for military-related assignments; for employment-related training; and those going on vacation.

The rest of the voters go to the polls November 4 to elect a delegate to the US Congress, 20 of the 21 members of the American Samoa House of Representatives and a proposed constitutional amendment to give the local Legislature the power to override the governor's veto of bills.

The Election Office says travelers who will return to the territory before November 4 are not eligible to vote by absentee ballot.
