Prospective candidates in this year's election in Tonga have been reminded they must reside in their electorates for the three months left before the poll.

On November the 27th, Tongans will vote for a mostly democratic parliament for just the second time.

17 seats will be publicly contested with another nine to be decided by the nobles.

The Supervisor of Elections, Pita Vuki, says the residential requirements are clearly laid out in the Electoral Act though exceptions are made for candidates with jobs on Tongatapu, where most people live.

"Because they are working here they don't need to leave their works and go back to their islands. Some of them can go there for a couple of weeks or something like that."
