Some Niue public servants promised more pay

Niue's Government wants a new pay scale to recognise those public servants who have specialised skills.

The Premier, Toke Talagi, says the new pay levels, which will be backdated to the 1st of July 2014, if the money is available, will only apply to those using these skills and not those working as administrators.

Earlier this year the Government agreed to most public servants working four days a week and being paid for five because it was unable to come up with a promised 20 percent pay increase.

Meanwhile Mr Talagi says he would like to put teachers on a par with other public servants and closer to the average pay in New Zealand.

The premier has pointed out teachers have got 3 pay rises in 3 years with the last one to recognise that they still work five days a week, unlike the 4 days scheme embraced by other public servants.
