Over 100 people turned out in American Samoa today to welcome the 31 crew members of the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokule'a, which arrived on the main island of Tutuila this afternoon.

The canoe, which is sailing around the world to demonstrate ancient sailing methods and to promote marine conservation, was escorted to Utulei beach by several outrigger canoes.

From the beach, the crew members performed a five-minute Hawaiian chant seeking permission to come ashore, which was granted by an orator with the Office of Samoan Affairs, Uso Lago'o.

An official welcoming ceremony was then held with traditional leaders, government representatives and off-island dignitaries.
