Urai to quit union job for Fiji election

3:26 pm on 13 August 2014

The president of the Fiji Trade Unions Congress, Daniel Urai, is reported to be resigning to enter politics.

FBC News reports that Mr Urai will quit his post and stand as a candidate of the People's Democratic Party in next month's election.

Under the regime's decree it is illegal for a unionist to run for parliament.

In May, the general secretary of the Fiji Council of Trade Unions, Attar Singh, also resigned to contest the election, standing for the National Federation Party.
