3:19 pm on 7 August 2014

The King of Tonga, Tupou VI, has officially opened the country's annual royal Agricultural and Fisheries show in Niuatoputapu.

In his opening address, the King said the show was important because it showcased the locals' source of food and beneficial lifestyle of sustainable living.

The tsunami in Niuatoputapu in 2009 and tropical cyclone Ian in Ha'apai earlier this year had devastated crops.

The King says alongside ensuring sufficient food supplies for people, it must be the Ministry of Agriculture's priority to boost the agricultural and fisheries sectors.
