Heart disease on rise among PNG youth

8:12 am on 23 July 2014

Papua New Guinea's Sir Buri Kidu Heart Institute reports more young people are being diagnosed with heart problems.

It comes after a 26-year-old patient suffered a heart attack.

PNG Village reports Dr Terry Maino from the Institute, told a recent medical fundraising dinner that since the 1980's the trend of heart diseases and infections has risen.

Dr Maino says the Port Moresby General Hospital has also seen an increase of heart infections, tuberculosis, all forms of cancer, HIV/AIDS, and diabetes.

He says a major cause is the lack of concern over young people's diet.
