Joint Samoan language commission proposed

The author of a new book on proper usage of the Samoan language says Samoa and American Samoa should have a joint language commission.

Fofo Iiga Sunia has just released his latest publication Timata le Gagana, or Repairing the Language, which is written entirely in Samoan.

Fofo says such a commission would ensure the preservation of the Samoan language, and that it was being used correctly, according to both Samoa and American Samoa.

"We have to be certain that we do it the same way, that it is agreeable to both sides. Word translation, word usage and especially the new words. I think that route of a commission, a joint commission, would be very, very helpful."

Fofo Iiga Sunia says he has tried to get the idea of a joint commission for the Samoan language on the agenda of the Samoa Summit.
