Tonga has committed 1.5 million US dollars to the regional fight against invasive species.

The chief executive officer for the Ministry of Lands, Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, Asipeli Palaki, says invasive species pose threats to the economy, food security and biodiversity.

He says more resources must be made availiable if the issue is to be addressed at both the national and regional levels.

Mr Palaki says part of Tonga's financial commitment will contribute to implementing activities outlined in its new National Invasive Species Strategy and Action Plan.

The Palau president, Tommy Remengesau Jr, made a similar commitment earlier this month.
