The Pacific group of nations that control access to much of the Pacific tuna is today expected to increase its charges for distant water fishing nations to access its waters.
The Parties to the Nauru Agreement have been meeting in Majuro in the Marshall Islands and our correspondent says it is certain the nations will demand more from next year under their vessel day scheme.
Giff Johnson says this charge could go up by 67 percent.
"It is definite that there should be an increase in the fishing day fee which is now 6000 US dollars a day. It is really a question of will it go up to the proposed 10,000 dollar level or be somewhere in the middle."
Giff Johnson says the vessel day scheme only applies to purse seiners but the PNA is looking at how to extend it to longliners.
The PNA members are Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Nauru and Palau.
