9:33 am on 20 May 2014

Papua New Guinea's cabinet has endorsed increasing the country's minimum wage to US$1.10, an almost 30 cent rise from the current rate.

The Post Courier reports that after 12 months the wage will then increase again to US$1.17 an hour, before rising again to US$1.21 after two years.

The determination will also cover various allowances, such as camping, tool and heavy duty allowances, which will also be increased.

The first installment of the raise will come into effect once gazetted.
