Sport: IRB to lift Fiji funding freeze

The International Rugby Board says Fiji's funding freeze will soon be lifted.

The governing body suspended direct funding to Fiji Rugby in January, citing its failure to implement key financial reporting, administration and governance reforms.

Speaking to media at a 2015 World Cup event in London, IRB CEO Brett Gosper said the Fiji Rugby Union have taken significant strides towards putting their house in order and their finances are in much better shape.

He says the money was never taken away from Fiji, simply frozen, and it was always their intention to release the funds once the necessary improvements were made.

New Flying Fijians coach, John McKee, also indicated earlier this week that recent meetings with the IRB had been positive and a formal re-engagement was not far away.
