The Samoa government has appointed Taitosaua Edward Winsterstein as the Commissioner of the newly established Prisons and Correction Services.
The position was advertised locally and overseas in which 19 people applied but only 10 were shortlisted for an interview.
The government says Taitosaua has the experience and qualifications to manage the new Prisons and Correction service after working in Australia for 17 years at the New South Wales Department of Corrective Services.
He had also worked part time for the Department of Justice in New Zealand as an assistant Warden.
Taitosaua is currently a member of the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa.
The new prisons and correction services will not be managed or run by the Ministry of Police as it was in the past.
The move to separate corrections from police stemmed from an inquiry into allegations of corruption at Tafaigata prison.
The findings into the inquiry has yet to be released.
