PNG National Disaster Centre waiting on assessment reports

10:22 am on 24 April 2014

Papua New Guinea's National Disaster Centre says it's waiting for assessment reports from disaster committees in Milne Bay and Bougainville before providing relief assistance to cyclone and earthquake victims.

The centre's acting director, Martin Mosese, told the newspaper, The National, that the centre doesn't have the funds to help the provinces, but it will seek government assistance once they have submitted their reports.

Mr Mosese says the provincial committees need to get their reports in as soon as possible, and long delays will only cause more suffering to people affected by natural disasters.
