Assessments needed to avoid aid waste after Solomons floods

The Solomon Islands Red Cross has stopped distributing non-food items until an updated assessment of the families affected by the recent floods is available.

The Deputy Secretary General of the Solomon Islands Red Cross, Clement Manuri, says accurate disaster assessments are crucial to efficient and accountable aid delivery.

"We been pushing the NDMO to get with other stakeholders for a proper assessment and we are looking forward to getting the right data of houses that are totally destroyed so that when we are distributing items it goes straight to those that are mostly affected by this flood."

Among the non-food items the Red Cross has put on hold are donated clothes meant for flood victims, many of whom are yet to receive clothing two weeks since the disaster struck.
