Ship wrecks a hazard in Fiji capital harbour

The founder of the Suva Harbour Foundation says he is concerned about the large number of wrecked ships in the Fiji capital's port and their potential threat to the environment.

Bob Gillett estimates there are dozens of abandoned fishing vessels in the harbour with some partially submerged and some sunk to the harbour floor.

He says the Sea Ports Management Act could be used by port authorities to remove derelict and dangerous vessels before they sink but it appears this has not be done.

The head of the Fiji Ports Corporation says it has invited expressions of interest from salvage companies and is pursuing options for a clean-up as the wrecks are a navigational hazard.
