Tahiti woman politician suggested for Paris seat

The French Polynesian president, Gaston Flosse, says he will suggest that his party nominate a woman for the likely by-election for a seat in the French National Assembly.

A by-election is expected in June to replace Edouard Fritch, who said he would quit his Paris post after winning the mayoralty of Pirae in the first round of the municipal elections.

Mr Flosse says his Tahoeraa Huiraatira is to hold a meeting to choose a candidate.

The territory's three members of the National Assembly have all been men belonging to the Tahoeraa.

Until 2007 one of the then two Paris posts were held by a woman of the Tahoeraa camp.
