3:04 pm on 24 March 2014

Voters in French Polynesia are going to the polls in municipal elections as polling has already ended in mainland France.

48 communes in French Polynesia are called to choose mayors.

Attention is focussing on Pirae where the president of the territorial assembly, Edouard Fritch, is seeking to reclaim the mayoralty that he lost to Beatrice Vernaudon.

The town is the traditional stronghold of the Tahoeraa Huiraatira of Gaston Flosse who was its mayor for 35 years.
