The PNG LNG project is understood to be ahead of schedule in terms of delivering it's first cargo of liquefied natural gas this year.

Australia's Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, is to be briefed on the project when he visits Papua New Guinea this week.

The media advisor to PNG's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill, Daniel Korimbao, says Mr O'Neill will bring Mr Abbott up to speed on the ExxonMobil PNG LNG project.

"It's our biggest resource project ever, and a number of Australian companies have investment in that project as well, including Santos. So we will be briefing Mr Abbott on the progress of that massive project that will transform our economy and that of Australia as well. It's first cargo will be out ahead of schedule, as we understand it from ExxonMobil."
