Fiji's Sodelpa party says it should have a preliminary list of election candidates by the end of the month.
The party's General Secretary, Pio Tabaiwalu, says there has been an outpouring of interest in standing for the party since it announced Ro Teimumu Kepa as party leader last week.
He says a selection committee is going through the list checking for compliance with the Political Parties Decree.
Mr Tabaiwalu says many potential candidates are waiting for the Electoral Decree before confirming their interest.
"Most of these candidates are in paid employment, some in consultancies, some working in companies and government. Yes they're waiting for the Electoral Decree to be out, to look at the rules and regulations. It's only fair that they wait, and in fact the process has allowed them that. They've put in their names in principle so we'll consider them when the Electoral Decree is out."
Pio Tabaiwalu says Sodelpa aims to field 50 candidates for the 50 seats on offer, including a mix of ethnicities, gender balance and young people.
Sodelpa arose out of the SDL party led by the former prime minister Laisenia Qarase, who was ousted in the 2006 coup.
