Reports from Papua New Guinea say misleading information apparently led to clashes between police and locals in Chimbu Province last week.
The Post Courier reports seven policemen and many locals were injured, 32 detained, ten houses razed to the ground and other properties in Waingar weres destroyed in a raid by Jiwaka and Mt Hagen police on Wednesday.
Thirteen suspects have been refused bail after a court appearance yesterday.
The incident started on Tuesday afternoon when a police unit was held up and attacked by villagers in Waingar along the Highlands Highway.
The police officers were held captive and their vehicle impounded by the angry locals who claimed police were harbouring a murder suspect.
