Rural health a struggle in Vanuatu

The deteriorating conditions of health services in rural areas of Vanuatu, as well as dilapidated roads, have been blamed for the recent death of a newborn baby in Malekula.

The child was delivered on a truck, while on its way to the hospital.

The Daily Post Newspaper says the mother had to travel from her home in Tismam Island to the mainland then by truck to Norsup Hospital.

Reports say she gave birth in the truck and the baby died shortly after.

Three years ago, another woman from the same island delivered her baby on a boat in the middle of a flooded river.
