Solomons Telecommuncations Commission warns of scammers

11:17 am on 24 February 2014

The Solomon Islands Telecommunications Commission has warned all mobile phone users to be aware of a fraudulent text message containing an international phone number and a password currently in circulation.

The Commission says the text message is an international scam aimed at getting confidential information from mobile phone owners, such as bank accounts to steal money.

Commission spokesperson, Haggai Arumae says the hoax message is not from Solomon Telekom or Be-mobile, but it could result in consumers incurring international charges if they call the number.

Mobile users are strongly advised not to believe instructions in the voicemail and to avoid giving confidential information such as bank details to senders of the text messages.

The Commission was alerted to the problem by the local mobile network operators, who are working on trying to find out where the text messages are coming from so that they can be intercepted.
