A senior Papua New Guinea police officer has castigated the Australian government for failing to act quickly on the list of grievances recently raised by asylum seekers on Manus island.
The National newspaper reports the Manus police commander Alex N'Drasal has told the Australian government it must properly run the centre in Lombrum and quickly attend to the issues raised by asylum seekers.
Commander N'Drasal says the treatment meted out to the asylum seekers was below standard.
He says the detainees had overwhelmed the G4S security guards earlier in the week, which resulted in serious damage and injuries, with one death and two others flown out of the country for medical treatment.
He says Australia should deploy qualified people to look after the centre, who have experience working in refugee camps.
The Australian Immigration Minister, Scott Morrison, has announced that within a week G4S security company will be completely removed and replaced with Wilson security, who are subcontracted to Transfield.
Fairfax reports in Australia say Wilson security staff have already started to arrive.
Mr Morrison says the replacement has nothing to do with the current problems, and the contract period for G4S has ended.
